Long dark green leaves, paler inner leaves and hearts used in salads, if grown naturally outside the leaves have a bitter flavour however if the plant is allowed to mature and then lifted and regrown in darkness leaves will be pale and tender with a sweet nutty flavour. roots dried and roasted as coffee substitute. Best grown throughout Autumn and Winter.
