Babaco ' Carica pentagona'
In the same family as Papaya this hybrid from Ecuador is also known as Mountain Papaya and Champagne fruit due to the effervescent sherbet like flesh. The babaco fruit is seedless and the smooth skin can also be eaten, the flavour has tastes of lemon sherbet, strawberry, papaya, kiwi and pineapple, ripe fruit is incredibly juicy and refreshing.
Plants are self fertile and require fertile , well drained soil. Well suited to container growing and will fruit within the first year or two. More cold tolerant than Pawpaw and papaya but protect from strong winds and frost especially when young.
