Sweet Black nebula carrots, tender Tokyo market turnips, snap peas, broccoli, celery, greens and coriander picked from the garden this evening to make a quick meal. Gently fry some chopped onion and whatever veggies you have available until softened to your liking, then add some leftover rice to the frying pan with some curry powder and salt and pepper cook for another few minutes and serve with a boiled egg and some chutney or Dahl. Radishes, carrots, beetroot and other root veg are easy and in most cases best to be sown direct in to the ground where they are to grow. It is important to remember to thin out any seedling growing to close together, imagine the size of your carrot or radish when full grown, if they are left too close they will not develop properly, plucked seedlings are unlikely to do well if transplanted but can be added to salads 🌱

Ginger in the ground when we need it…what a treat! Our location in the chittering hills is not ideal for growing this tropical rhizome, we get cold and sometimes frosty winters and very hot temperatures and dry winds in summer. We have created a perfect little microclimate by converting a secondhand shade house, we have it covered with greenhouse film, in the summer we use the original green shade cloth it came with over the top, and open doors for ventilation otherwise it would be like an oven. In the autumn, winter and early spring shade is removed to let more light in as ginger prefers not to be in complete shade to produce nice rhizomes. Soil is free draining but has been enriched with plenty of compost.

It maybe mid winter but we’re busy getting your Summer corn seed ready. Here my young helper demonstrates removing the dried corn seed from the husk. We should have plenty of open pollinated, untreated varieties back in stock in the next month or so 😀🌽

Beat the winter blues and flu’s! Im a strong believer eating a diverse, varied diet of naturally produced foods can help keep us healthy and keep our immune systems in good working order. Last year I was feeling a little run down and had some a acupuncture treatments as I had responded really well in the past, one of the foods the practitioner mentioned would be beneficial especially with the dreaded c virus doing the rounds was buddha’s hand. I was happy as our tree had just started producing. So here is how I use this unusual fruit - rinse and dry, then dehydrate on a low heat setting. Then store over the winter months to make tea sweetened with honey or I feel like I’m coming down with something I simmer in a pot of water along with mulberry leaves.

We haven’t had an issue with aphids for a few years, our garden had found a balance and small birds and beneficial insects were keeping them in check but this last month we have seen an explosion in numbers, still not to the point the point where plants are looking stressed but to the point where you pick a broccoli and have hitch hikers. For a moment I was almost tempted to use some sort of pest control such as quick acting pyrethrum or maybe Neem but whilst both are naturally derived they will still both interrupt the natural life cycles and food cycles in our garden/ eco system.So instead I decided to take the logical, rational and cost effective approach of roasting the little mother f**ckers. We eat mostly a vegetarian and need to find cost effective ways of sourcing protein, I’m pleased to report they imparted a beautiful nutty favour to this evening’s winter salad. Lets face it guys we need to get real, pretty soon too. Eating bugs ain’t going to hurt you ✌️

Harvesting the last of the tomatillo before the frosty weather gets them, this interesting tangy tomato like fruit also known as Mexican husk tomato dates back to ancient Mayan times and is a staple in many Mexican recipes. We have also harvested some for seed this year so watch out next spring 👀

Spent a good few hours working out in the garden with my young helper over the weekend. Now if you task a kid with the job of weeding they probably wont last too long but theres nothing more exciting than digging for treasure in this case it was a bountiful crop of Jerusalem artichokes. Digging Potatoes, pulling carrots and garlic also seem to up there with fun jobs. So if you want to get the kids out in the garden plant some root veg for the win! 😁

Happy International Bee day! Yes there is a day for everything these days, but this ones important! These amazing creatures along with a host of other amazing and in many cases misunderstood insects play a vital role in collectively keeping ecosystems in balance and ensuring larger creatures such as humans have food to survive. So whilst they may seem insignificant to many, please be mindful before spraying insecticides around your home garden or farm, the consequences are far reaching. In the pics are a rare photo of a blue banded bee in our garden…they are quite common at our place but bloody impossible to photograph but I persevered today for the occasion! Other pics are European honey bees and full frame harvested from our hive. The last pic is the result of washing and cleaning the beeswax, the byproduct is a mix of water and unpasteurised live honey that can then be fermented and turned into mead (honey wine) without the use of any other additives or preservatives. Did you know the term honeymoon came about when in medieval times newly weds used to drink mead on the eve of their wedding. Did you also know when you see a honey bee foraging for pollen it is most likely to be a female, you guessed it they do the majority of the work whilst the lazy drones just mate with the queen and eat honey 🍯🐝 but who knows maybe they tell great jokes and keep everyone entertained too, the life of a bee colony is complex and there is lots more to learn!

I have been quiet on social media for a while as we took some time out to travel our beautiful state and spend some special times together as a family, one thing I miss if we go away is eating out of our garden daily. Pictured is the haul of produce from the garden I managed to squeeze in when packing up😅 followed by some holiday snaps, the white flower is a bush passionfruit, an introduced species that has naturalised here…produces delicious small yellow fruit that can be eaten whole, we found them in the millstream Chichester national park and again on the Dampier peninsular.

We don’t just sell seed we grow them too! Although this cob was picked for eating most will be allowed to mature and dry for seed. This is our last crop of corn for this season. Country Gentleman is an Heirloom sweetcorn variety dating back to 1890. It is unusual as it's white kernels are arranged irregularly, not in rows. The kernels are also very deep and narrow, hence its alternate name, Shoe-peg. In good conditions it can yield up to three ears per stalk. Has a good corn flavour not as sweet as some modern hybrid variety's. Imported corn seed is often treated with fungicide and it is hard to find open pollinated varieties that are suitable for seed saving. Luckily there are passionate seed savers here in WA that have been growing and saving seeds for generations and we encourage our customers to do the same 🙂 When growing corn to save seed aim to grow 100 or more plants to ensure genetic diversity of future seed and do not grow other varieties nearby as corn is wind pollinated. Getting this years Florence fennel seed harvested before the rain comes…if it ever does! This is the 4th generation of this fennel grown here @thrivesustainability it produces crunchy bulbs that can be cut and come again. Weekend grocery shop done. Food prices are sky rocketing whilst the 2 main supermarkets here in Australia are reporting large profit increases. We experimented creating natural dyes today to change the colour of our homegrown cotton (No we haven’t mastered the art of spinning it yet its harder than it looks😅) we collected our ingredients chopped and placed in jars topped up 3rd of the way with boiling water, then we placed jars in a water bath (large saucepan of boiling water that doesn’t cover the jars completely ) we simmered the mixtures for about half an hour before then allowing to cool and strain liquid. The red cabbage, butterfly pea and the bark of The Eucalyptus wandoo produced the best dyes - see final picture. We might try using the pigments as water colour paints next, maybe they would make good dyes for homemade easter eggs too? Just another example of how the garden can provide 🌈

Breakfast for two …perfectly ripe homegrown mango. Mango growing tips 🥭prepare soil well before planting, good drainage and nutrient rich soil is required (add compost) if you have heavy clay mangos will be prone to root rot build a large mound to plant tree on🥭protect young trees from extreme heat/cold/ wind by constructing a shade cloth windbreak around tree, once established mango’s need full sun. 🥭 Mango require daily water in summer when newly planted, once established deep watering every 3 days should be sufficient during summer (remember watering duration will depend on soils ability to retain moisture)

Thanks to everyone who came along to today’s workshop, we had a full house. I hope everyone enjoyed the day and of course, the best part about an edible garden…the food. We had spiced butternut squash soup, warrigal greens and brazilian spinach quiche (pictured is the gluten free crustless version made in a pie maker) eggplant dip and pretty self sown carrots, brie and fig crackers and brie and home harvested honeycomb crackers all prettied up with some edible flowers, because food always tastes better when its pretty🌼 The edible flowers are blue endive flowers, golden rod (that also have many medicinal uses) and rosemary.

Thank you to local business @happy.snackz for supplying such delicious raw snacks for our Workshop morning tea, they always go down well….and I always have to hide them from the family so they don’t disappear 😂

Today is a big cookathon day, in preparation for tomorrows workshop! Here is a huge big bowl of 2 brilliant spinach substitutes for warmer months, Brazilian spinach and Warrigal greens. Greens, caramelised onion and feta quiche is on the menu tomorrow 😋

What can a garden do for your family? Well it can feed you and give you a relaxing place to spend time and play. That is just the start though, Pictured is my young helper in his ‘Rainforest’ It started when I decided to use an old greenhouse to grow ginger and turmeric and he asked if he could put a pond in it, I thought why not? Well he then got pretty involved and dug the hole for the pond, placed the stepping stones helped plant the ginger…this was no longer going to be my ginger greenhouse this is now Joshua’s rainforest 😂 The last pictures are how it looked in the beginning only a few months ago in November. It has become a really special place for Josh and he was so inspired by it he asked if he could do a project about rainforest this term. He visits it morning and night, spending time watching the fish in his pond, observing how quickly some of the plants can grow (placing little markers on some of the trellis to measure it) He has marvelled at the amazing properties of Taro leaves and how they are water repellent, and we have done some experiments to try and work out why. He has noticed some larvae in the tiny ponds in the bromeliads, it has triggered so many questions about plants, how some adapt to grow in unusual ways and really inspired him to take notice of the natural world and what it has to offer. So grow a garden parents, your kids will probably not take much notice, but then one day they might really surprise you and become a complete plant fanatic like yourself 😍

Looks spicy hey? Well you are in for a surprise with these, they are actually a delightfully sweet, flavourful capsicum called Jimmy Nardello. We are growing these for seed this season so look out for them on our online store in a few months www.thrivesustainability.com.au

The Turmeric flowering is a magical sight, this amazing plant not only adds colour and flavour to cooking but has been used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for hundreds of years. Now there have been many studies that have proved it has a wide range of benefits to our health. It is an anti-inflammatory, may help depression, can ease the symptoms of IBS, it has antioxidant properties …the list goes on. Whilst it is a tropical plant it can be grown in a warm sheltered spot here in Perth with regular water throughout the summer, It dies back in winter and ensure the tubers are in well drained soil, if they are in wet cold ground they may rot. We find it foes best here in large pots or in the ground in our greenhouse that has the protection of shade cloth.

Sweet Potato Rosti Bruschetta with weedy salad🍅 Bruschetta is a summer staple in our house, the norm of course is for the Bruschetta to be toasted bread with the fresh topping of tomatoes and basil but here is a little twist using white ‘Northern star’ sweet potato that grows prolifically here at Thrive Sustainability and with the addition of a weedy salad made with herbs and some nutrient dense weeds that need to be kept under control somehow! I have been busy harvesting Egyptian walking onions. Growth starts like a regular onion at the top of the plant, a cluster of bulblets/topsets will begin to grow and reach maturity in summer. When the topsets become heavy enough, they will pull the plant over to the ground. If the soil conditions are right, the fallen topsets will take root and grow into new Egyptian Walking Onion plants, hence the name, "Walking Onion. In the ground, the base of the Egyptian Walking Onion plant produces a shallot-like onion which can be harvested. If left in the ground, the onion will divide and form a cluster or clump of onion bulbs. These perennial onions are a valuable alternative to regular onions in our garden, once growing in healthy soil conditions they will go on self propagating for years to come. A nice bunch of Broccoli Raab 'Spring Rapini' for dinner. This Italian vegetable is incredibly nutritious and has a stronger flavour than regular broccoli. I use young leaves raw in salads or mixed through bruschetta, they have a nutty/spicy flavour similar to rocket. more mature leaves and the small heads are delicious sautéed with Garlic with a squeeze of lemon juice, tonight though they were added to a stir fry. As with most broccoli they grow well through the cooler season however these were self seeded plants and have grown remarkably well all throughout summer, I find this is the case for many of the old Italian heirloom broccoli especially for variety's not specifically grown for large heads. We have seed available for this variety online (see comments for link below) and as these have done so well and no other brassica have been flowering on the property at the same time we will be saving seed from these too😃

The Latin or Scientific names for plants are often a helpful clue in identification, the meaning often helps describe the plants features. Here is the amazing flower of Clitoria ternatea in our garden. The flowers can be used to make tea and drinks, that will be a vivid blue until you add lemon, lime or any other acidic ingredient, then the colour magically changes! The flowers have many medicinal benefits and are rich in antioxidants. Oh and if you don’t want to serve up Clitoris tea to your guests you can call it butterfly pea 😉 We have seeds available for sale online for these beautiful climbing plants💚

Air drying your excess chilli harvest is a really easy way to preserve them for months/years to come, so easy even kids can do it! Once you are confident they are completely dry store in an air tight box in the pantry, if you leave them hanging for too long they may start to loose their colour. I think they make great decorations too🌶🥰

We will have Egyptian walking onions available for sale at www.thrivesustainability.com.au again at the end of the summer/early autumn, we have been growing them here for a few years now and found them to be a reliable and useful crop, they self propagate and are a fascinating variety to see grow 🧅

Our 2 small ponds are a hive of activity on hot days, pardon the pun! The lilly’s and damp shallow margins of the other pond provide a safe way for bees, wasps and other flying insects to get a drink. If you don’t have a pond just a shallow bowl or tray of water filled with gravel and so they can safely land without drowning is ideal 🐝

The garden is a constant source of surprises and wonder 💚 Looking forward to enjoying some sweet homegrown dragon fruit, this variety is really delicous and sweet and it is self fertile, however we collected some pollen to store in the fridge for when some other varitoes flower that require cross pollination 😃

After a looong wait (nearly 2 years from sowing) we finally have parsnip flowers! 🎉 so fingers crossed we will have some parsnip seeds back in stock in a few months 🤞

Happy new year everyone! I hope your gardens fed you well over the festive period, here is one of the garden creations we enjoyed - Middle eastern inspired beetroot dip ! It was simple to make - roast a couple of beetroot in foil, takes about an hour depending on size and 10 min before the end throw in some unpeeled garlic cloves. Whilst this is cooking dry fry a teaspoon each of coriander and cumin seeds and a teaspoon of cinnamon. Once roasted the garlic squeezes out of its clove and add all into a food processor with a cup of yoghurt, lemon juice and a few dashes of olive oil. Blitz until it is desired consistency. Top with some crushed pistashio. Enjoy👌

Got the root veg and spuds dug this morning for Christmas dinner, a few Ruby brussel sprouts, red cabbage, beans and leafy greens to pick in the morning so they’re nice and fresh 💚 Food from the garden …my kind of gift 🎁

Our Rhubarb is looking healthy, lush and Red❤️ The key to happy rhubarb is rich moist soil, full of organic matter in a dappled shade position (here in hot WA)The secret to Red stems has nothing to do with growing conditions but more to do with choice of variety and growing from a red stemmed crown (a rhizome of a red stem mother plant) opposed to planting a Seed grown plant that may not grow true to type. Last picture is some rhubarb gin in the making…simply rhubarb muddled with caster sugar and steeped in gin for a few weeks 😊

Early Mornings in the garden are always joyful but something in this photo got me very excited….can you spot it? Clue it will hopefully result in blue fruit that are usually yellow 😜

Things are not always peaceful in the @thrivesustainability garden! Garden battles or a bit of Lizard Lovin ?🤔🦎🦎 Either way these garden residence are a gardeners best friend tbey will catch many pesky grasshopper and locusts that damage plants. We avoid using chemicals in the garden and privide hidey holes and habitat in form of logs and rock crevises to ensure they always feel welcome.

There is still time to plant another round of tomato’s. My tips for planting are if multiple plants have germinated in the pot, soak roots in a bowl and gently tease apart. Remove lower leaves and plant deeper than it was in the original pot, this will encourage more roots to grow from stem resulting in a plant with a deeper root system that will help the plant in times of extreme heat. Ensure newly planted seedling are watered daily or even twice daily if the weather is extremely hot until in has become established…Happy tomato season everyone 🍅🍅🍅

Productive evening 👍Sun dried tomato’s in jars, peach chutney made, big jar of rhubarb compote to enjoy with yoghurt and porridge and the beginnings of rhubarb gin. Harvesting home grown food gives you a great sense of happiness and contentment, preserving it so you, family and friends can enjoy it for months and years to come is a feeling that is hard to beat 💚

A tiny silver eye bird managed to sneak in to the peach net and took little pecks out of quite a few of the fruit ….all is not lost however I will be making spiced peach chutney with this lot whilst little silver eye feasts on young berries in the garden !

Normal people on a stormy, rainy morning - ‘’better stay inside and stay dry’’ Gardeners - ‘’Brilliant perfect conditions to plant out some more summer seedlings!’’ Who else did some gardening in the rain this morning? 🌧

Breakfast from the garden sweet potato rosti with scrambled eggs with lots of herbs,sweet tomatoes, spinach, french sorrel and sauerkraut so delish😋The sweet potato is Northern star, a red skinned, white flesh variety that is the hardiest and most vigorous type, the texture is drier than the orange type which makes it really good for making nice crispy rosti!
