Egyptian Spinach ( Corchorus olitorius )
A treasure from the ancient world, Egyptian Spinach, also known as “Molokhia,” is a nutritious green leafy vegetable, high in vitamins, minerals and protein. It is perfect for warm climates. Its young leaves are tender and mild, ideal for fresh salads, while the mature leaves develop a rich flavour, excellent for cooking in stews and soups. As the leaves cook, they release a unique, jelly-like substance, making them a natural thickener for your culinary creations.
Its stems traditionally were used to produce jute. It’s a robust grower, reaching up to 120cm, and thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Begin harvesting once the plant reaches 50cm for a continuous supply of leaves. This plant is a valuable staple in our garden that thrives even throughout summer heatwaves.
Sow seeds directly in spring or summer, 5mm deep, in moist soil, and expect germination within 7-14 days at 25-30°C. Space plants 30cm apart in rows 50cm apart. Enjoy the harvest in about 60 days, and watch for red spider mites, the only known pest of this hardy plant.
Approximately 50 seeds.
